Disguise Self-Portraits of Rodney Graham

Art Museum Gösta 24.10.2020—18.4.2021

In his exhibition, Artists and Models, renowned Canadian artist Rodney Graham brings to the Serlachius Museums his disguise self-portraits for which he is best known.

Rodney Graham (b. 1949) lives and works in Vancouver. He is one of his country’s most respected contemporary artists and has exhibited extensively throughout the world. Graham’s exhibition at Serlachius Museum Gösta is his first in Finland.

In his works, Graham explores the layers of Western culture, both everyday life and collective memory. He draws on wide-ranging references to philosophy, psychoanalysis, and the art and popular culture of different eras.

He is best known for his disguise self-portraits, monumental photographic works in which he smoothly assumes various fictional roles. His art is characterised not only by subtle nostalgia and melancholy, but also gentle humour, poetic irony and meticulous finishing of the works. Timo Valjakka is the curator of the exhibition.

Invitation to Rodney Graham’s new show

The exhibition Artists and Models introduces a wide selection of Rodney Graham´s monumental photographic works, disguise self-portraits for the first time in Finland. To our annoyance we could not arrange a vernissage due to Covid-19. So, please come along on a tour with curator Timo Valjakka! Except for welcoming words by Pauli Sivonen, the video is in English language.
