Life with its phenomena unfolds in a surprising way in Serlachius’ exhibitions in 2025

Serlachius’ exhibition programme for 2025 comprises nine new exhibitions which give a versatile view on the oeuvre of Finnish and international artists.

The themes of the exhibitions range from the fragility and pressure points of human life to examining nature and the built environment, to opera sets seen in Rome and the footsteps of a mysterious artist from the 1600s. Life with its various phenomena opens up to viewers in a surprising and curious way.

Giorgio de Chirico

Serlachius Headquarters 15 March – 17 August 2025

The exhibition tells of Giorgio de Chirico’s (1888-1978) intense relationship with Rome, the city where he lived and worked for thirty years. There is a particular emphasis on de Chirico’s theatrical output – the costumes and sets of performances seen at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Curators of the exhibition are Hannu Palosuo, Italo Nunziata, Cornelia Bujin and Lorenzo Canova.

Measured and Drawn

Serlachius Headquarters 15 March 2025 – 1 March 2026

The exhibition presents existing buildings in the form of new drawings by architects and architecture students. The drawings in the exhibition are the result of measurement camps held in autumn 2023. Architecture students from the University of Tampere measured ten housing-related subjects in Mänttä from different periods. Huhkojärvi farm, founded by Gösta Serlachius in the late 1920s, was documented by architects from the International Vernadoc Network. The exhibition is curated by Milla Sinivuori-Hakanen.

Master I.S. – The Enigmatic Contemporary of Rembrandt

Serlachius Manor 12 April – 17 August 2025

One of the great mysteries of 17th-century Dutch art is the identity of the artist who signed his paintings with the initials I.S. The exhibition at Serlachius is the first comprehensive overview of the artist’s career. The exhibition and research project are realised in collaboration with Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden, the Netherlands. The exhibition is curated by Tomi Moisio.

Open Group: Repeat After Me

Serlachius Manor 12 April – 20 July 2025

How to tell, in an empathetic way, about the horrors of war without showing destroyed cities or mutilated bodies? In their video installation, the Ukrainian artist collective Open Group invites in front of their cameras Ukrainian civilians who fled Russia’s illegal war of aggression. They replay the sounds of alarm sirens, rockets, artillery emplacements and other weapon systems. The exhibition is curated by Pauli Sivonen.

Keith Tyson: Universal Symphony

British artist Keith Tyson’s (b. 1969) technically and conceptually astonishing diverse sculptures and paintings are inspired by elements from, among other things, the natural sciences, mathematics, poetry and mythology. Viljami Heinonen: Somewhere in Between

Serlachius Headquarters 13 September 2025 – 1 March 2026

Viljami Heinonen (b. 1986) is known for his powerfully expressive paintings, which almost make one feel breathless on looking at them. Heinonen’s new paintings take the viewer into a fading urban milieu, where people encounter not only themselves but also other people bruised by the knocks and bumps of life. As is typical of Heinonen, nature is also strongly present in his works. The exhibition is curated by Eeva Ilveskoski.

Milja Viita: People on Sunday

Serlachius Manor 13 September 2025 – 19 April 2026

Milja Viita’s (b. 1974) film installation refers in its name to the German classic film Menschen am Sonntag(1930). The film, which depicts the leisure time of young adults, is now seen above all as the “last summer” before the rise of Nazism and the devastation of the Second World War. Have we learned anything from history, or are we doomed to make the same mistakes over and over again? The exhibition is curated by Tomi Moisio.

Stiina Saaristo: Always Happy

Serlachius Manor 22 November 2025 – 19 April 2026

Stiina Saaristo (b. 1976) is known for her large and skilfully detailed drawings, which are characterised by macabre humour and grotesque use of self-portraiture. Processing life’s pain points and difficult emotions has been at the heart of Saaristo’s career: her works make visible the use of power, jealousy, greed or aggression. The retrospective presents the artist’s artworks from 1995–2025. The exhibition is curated by Laura Kuurne.
