Neo-Rococo and the North
Neo-Rococo and the North is an exhibition publication. Finnish Literature Society published it in connection to an exhibition shown at Serlachius Museum Gösta. The exhibition consisted of artwork from the Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation’s collection as well as artwork on loan from renowned art collections from France, Sweden and Finland.
Neo-Rococo and the North opens up new perspectives on Neo-Rococo painting and sets the phenomenon within the wider admiration of the 18th century in Sweden ja Finland. Neo-Rococo and its Nordic form Gustavian style are best known as interior design styles. In contrast, the artworks that found their inspiration from the Rococo era are less well-known. The book highlights the cultural and political circumstances reflected in Neo-Rococo art.
The book contains articles that open up our understanding of Nordic Neo-Rococo. Laura Gutman and Maria Vainio-Kurtakko have authored articles of the book. Laura Gutman positions Nordic Neo-Rococo to its historical context. On the other hand, Maria Vainio-Kurtakko examines it from a wider European perspective. The book is an important introduction to a subject that has so far been studied very little.
