EventThe Art Town Film Festival is a film festival in the Art Town of Mänttä-Vilppula from 15 to 18 October 2026. For four days, the city will be filled with stories, filmmakers and film art.

The Film Festival’s screenings will be held in four different locations: the old Kino Säte, Kuvatorppa in Kolho as well as Bio Säde and Serlachius Headquarters in Mänttä. On this page, we present the films that will be screened at the Serlachius Headquarters.

Matti Ijäs: Kehvelit, 1981

Thursday 15 October at 12 noon Serlachius Headquarters

In the children’s road movie by Matti Ijäs, master of television film, scarecrows Leka and Löttönen (Heikki Kinnunen and Sulevi Peltola) decide to go to the city to search for the farm’s missing farmer.

Jotaarkka Pennanen: Hamlet, 1992

The later of Jotaarkka Pennanen’s two Hamlet film adaptations, a rarely seen television film of almost four hours, with Heikki Kinnunen in the title role.

Mai Zetterling’s extremely rarely screened TV film about Vincent van Gogh. The opening image is Alain Resnais’s short documentary Van Gogh (1948).

Anssi Mänttäri, Annabell Lee, 1990

Friday 16 October at 2 pm Serlachius Headquarters

Middle-ageing and aging are at the heart of Mänttäri. This time, Kari Heiskanen has the honour of personifying a variation of the theme, in which a petty bourgeois who is remedying his painful divorce with a pint of beer hears shocking news about his ex.

Perhaps Annabel Lee’s convention-breaking narrative reflects the notion of middle age as the most confusing phase of humanity – which is still the first time for a serious reckoning, which unites Mänttäri’s films across the board.

100 years of Finnish jazz: short film screening

The screening includes the following short films: Edward Vesala – Percussionist (Philip von Knorring, 1973/2026), Jazz in Old House (Osmo Harkimo, 1961), Opus H2O (Osmo Harkimo, 1962), EP-X-503 (Erkko Kivikoski, 1962). The programme will be supplemented.

Kevät 1943 (1990) + Sotaerakko (1972)

The Continuation War-themed Spring 1943 is Mänttäri at its most serious, a ballad about a desanti dropped in the middle of the snow and a boy who protects him, trying to understand the warfare of adults. The community formed by a small croft and the spy-circumstances-forced-circumstances touchingly portrayed by Ville Sandqvist create an atmosphere of fear, even though all parties are quite ordinary people. Such is the mechanism of war.

Before his screen debut, The Earth is a Sinful Song (1973), Mollberg made War Hermit (1972), based on a true case during the Winter War, for television in a similarly naturalistic style. The main role is played by the director’s discovery, the brilliant amateur actor Aimo Saukko.

Heikki Klemetti, played by him, is left alone in an abandoned house in the border region after the fighting has begun. Mollberg relies on visual expression and understated acting.
