Major Anish Kapoor exhibition at Serlachius in spring 2026

Press release 17 October 2025An exhibition by British artist Anish Kapoor, one of the world’s most significant contemporary artists, will open at Serlachius in May 2026. The Fine Arts Foundation’s major venture will bring to Serlachius paintings by Kapoor that delve into eternal questions, as well as a new monumental sculpture.

Kapoor is renowned for his bold, sensual sculptures that hold a dynamic relationship with the viewer in the spaces they inhabit and create. Often using scale as a tool, his works are both intimate and architectural in their reach.

Kapoor will create a new sculpture of monumental scale for Serlachius’ largest exhibition space. The other exhibition halls feature his paintings from recent years as well as works in smaller scale.

Anish Kapoor explores the borderland between our inner world and external reality. He makes skilful use of visual archetypes and metaphysical opposites. The exhibition curated by Timo Valjakka is on show at Serlachius Manor from 23 May 2026 to 4 April 2027.

Anssi Kasitonni – Below Zero Finnish Art Award 2025

Last year, Anssi Kasitonni won the fourth Below Zero Finnish Art Award, for 2025, organised by the Beaconsfield Gallery in London, the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland, and Serlachius.

During his London residency, which was part of the award, Kasitonni delved into the history of the Beaconsfield Gallery and discovered its past as a charitable institution and school for local poor children. He found something else: an old graphic print depicting the grand pediment that once crowned the portico of a demolished part of the school.

In his style that draws inspiration from pop art, Kasitonni decided to recreate the pediment as a large sculpture to be erected in the gallery. The artist himself understood that his creative method adapted a kind of Chinese Whispers idea. One idea led to another, soon to a third and then to a fourth.

The sculpture and an exhibition of his other recent works will be on display at the Serlachius Headquarters from 21 May to 30 August 2026. The exhibition is co-curated by David Crawforth, Naomi Siderfin, Pauli Sivonen and Tarja Väätänen.

On Foot

Walking connects every aspect of human experience – the purposeful stride back home after a hard day’s work, a brief stroll for fresh air, the struggle against environmental forces, the walk towards a possible death, even death itself walking – at least in an artwork.

On Foot presents the first comprehensive examination of walking in a Finnish museum to trace how artists and scientists over two centuries have found in this most fundamental activity a subject capable of carrying profound meanings about human nature.

Building on and expanding from the work of Finnish artists in the collections of the Serlachius Museums – from Akseli Gallen-Kallela to Elina Brotherus and Marcus Collin to Mark Wallinger. In addition, the exhibition showcases artworks on loan from other Finnish museums as well as new works by contemporary artists.

The exhibition curated by Dr Tomi Moisio and Dr Carlos Idrobo is on show at Serlachius Headquarters from 26 September 2026 to 21 February 2027.
