Works by Schjerfbeck from Serlachius to New York

The comprehensive exhibition Seeing Silence – The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) will open at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5 December. This is the first solo exhibition by a Finnish artist at this world-famous museum.

Four of Schjerfbeck’s works have been borrowed from Serlachius for the exhibition: Male Nude (c. 1882), The Portrait of Helena Westermarck (1884), The Skier (1909) and The Motorist, Måns Schjerfbeck (1929). In total, about sixty works from various public and private collections have been loaned to the exhibition. This rare exhibition features works from the artist’s entire career.

Laura Kuurne, Head of Collections and Exhibitions at Serlachius, believes that the artist, who is already highly respected, will permanently establish her place in the history of Western art as a result of this exhibition.

Seeing Silence, an exhibition presenting Schjerfbeck’s work, is open at The Met Museum from 5 December 2025 to 5 April 2026.
