Eeckhout’s painting in the Serlachius Collection

What did the research and conservation work reveal?

The video tells the story of Abraham Meeting Melchizedek, a painting created in 1648 by the renowned Dutch artist Gerbrandt van den Eeckhout (1621–1674). The work was acquired for the Serlachius collection in 1938. Conservation and research on the painting began in 2020 and were completed in autumn 2025.

In the video, curator and gallerist Veikko Halmetoja discusses the motif and provenance of the painting and his personal relationship with the work with Laura Kuurne, Head of Collections and Exhibitions at Serlachius.

Conservator Maija Santala explains the conservation of the painting and the challenges involved. Visual artist and painter Riikka Lenkkeri, who specialises in historical painting techniques, demonstrates in practice what the sky in the painting may originally have looked like.
