What kind of thoughts and feelings does art evoke? The guided tour, which includes both early art and contemporary art, explores the exhibitions implementing the principle of search, grasp and discover. The aim of the guided tour for schoolchildren is the joy of discovery and the enjoyment of art. The spirit of the tour is playful, and it activates and encourages one’s own observations. Small verbal activities are done while watching.

2. FOREST TRAIL

See and experience the many possibilities of the forest! With the experiential Forest Trail guided tour, you will set off and get to know the forest and its importance for us and art. The tour begins with a tour on the museum’s own Taavetti Island at Serlachius Manor, doing fun tasks and observing nature. At the end, we will take a look at artworks inspired by forest nature in the museum. 

The guided tour can also be combined with a half-hour workshop inspired by the forest.

3. COLOUR HAS AN EFFECT

We cannot touch colour, but color touches us in many ways. How have colour-related phenomena been utilised in art? How is colour used to express emotions and impressions? On the exhibition tour, we will explore the artists’ use of colour and its significance in works of art. We experience and perceive how colours affect us and our environment, and how they even fool us. In the workshop, we will make our own colourful works.

4. TRY MAKING A GRAPHIC PRINT

Would you like to try printing a graphic artwork? In our workshop, you can be a printmaker for a while. First, you will get acquainted with the works in the museum’s exhibitions, and inspired by them, you will come up with ideas and make your own artwork to take home. The workshop will go through the principles of making a graphic print. The observations drawn on the sketch papers are transferred to a metal sheet, each sheet is prepared for printing and the work is printed. A genuine press is used in the production. Everyone gets to take their own work with them.

5. THE WORLD OF SCULPTURES

Try sculpting from plaster! In the sculpture workshop, you will get to know the sculptures in the museum’s exhibitions and create your own work. Throughout the ages, people have been interested in the shapes inside the stone. Throughout their history, humans have been working with tools, buildings and monuments from stone for thousands of years. The exhibition tour examines sculptures made of different materials and considers how their forms express, for example, the forces of nature or movement. In the workshop, you will sculpt your own artwork from plaster using the sculptor’s tools.

6. GUIDED TOUR FOR THE SCHOOLS AT SERLACHIUS HEADQUARTERS

On the tour we dive into exhibitions and the world of the past at the Serlachius Headquarters. The guide leads the group through the museum and tells stories about history. Things are discussed in a fun and experiential way. Along the way, you will learn about the birth of the Finnish forest industry, the construction of an ideal society and the way of life in the old days in a small factory town in the middle of forests. The tour includes functional activities and a touch of art.

7. WORK FOR THE COMPANY

History comes to life at the Serlachius Headquarters. An experiential drama guided tour leads to job search and practices in the 1950s. It’s 1951, and your group is a group of job seekers getting to know the paper company’s diverse summer job offering. At the head office, you will be greeted by a secretary who is proud of her position and aware of her self esteem. She familiarises new employees with the company’s habits. And at the same time, etiquette is also reviewed. Finally, the museum’s paper workshop will test how papermaking goes.

8. MYSTERY GAME

In the game aimed at young people, teams compete on a task course that breathes history. An interesting environment motivates you to learn new things, and at the same time, you become more familiar with cultural history in an experiential way. In addition to solving the mystery, the students learn about the birth of the forest industry and Gustaf Adolf Serlachius, one of the first paper mill owners He was also called the Paper Devil due to his strong character. The functional activities deal with, for example, life in 19th-century Finland, the different lives of social classes in a small industrial town, the significance of the paper industry as a developer of Finland, the environmental impacts of industry and the artists of the Golden Age. Problem-solving and teamwork also develop learning skills, multiliteracy and cooperation skills.

9. HISTORY ORIENTEERING

In the history orienteering for secondary schools, the pupils get to tour the Serlachius Headquarters in pairs and solve tasks. The answers to these questions can be deduced from information provided in the museum’s various spaces by research and reasoning. The tour draws its themes from, among other things, the forest industry, which contributed to Finland’s prosperity, and the patronage activities of the Serlachius family, who worked in the paper industry, i.e. supporting artists of their time.

10. PAPER WITH YOUR OWN HANDS

In the workshop, everyone gets to make paper on their own. Papermaking is suitable for people of all ages. With the guidance of the instructor, the wire is used to create, for example, a unique sheet of paper or a paper craft to take home. When ordering a paper workshop session, it is agreed in advance what kind of work your group will do.

11. PAINT WITH BLUEBERRIES

Paint beautiful, atmospheric nature motifs with different shades of blue derived from blueberries! The theme can be forest animals or even a fairytale forest landscape. We admire blue, purple and reddish tones, and at the same time explore how close colours fit harmoniously with each other. We study the artists’ use of values and close colours, and paint different degrees of darkness in our own work with blueberry colour. The workshop includes a visit to the experiential The World of Forest.

12. FROM A SEED TO A TREE

Planting a forest is a good environmental act. But how do the trees in the forest grow? In the workshop, we will study how seeds develop inside a cone, detach and enable a new tree to grow. We hide tree seeds in a fun-shaped planting tray made of papier-mâché, which everyone can plant in the ground or in a pot as they wish at home. The workshop includes a visit to the experiential The World of Forest.

13. IN THE FOREST ON THE TRAIL OF THE MASTERS

Get inspired by the landscape paintings in our art collection and paint your own forest landscape! At first, we will examine the masters’ forest nature-themed works, their themes, colours, composition and other implementation. After this, we design and paint our own forest landscape. The workshop includes a visit to the experiential World of the Forest.

14. AWSOME ADS

What do Serlachius company’s old advertisements tell us about their time? What kind of products were manufactured and advertised during wartime or shortages? What about the 1980s? We will get to know the old commercials and the world behind them. We also study today’s advertisements, their appearance and means of influence, as well as modern marketing methods. Together, we will try out what kind of advertisement artificial intelligence would make for us. Finally, the pupils design their own advertisements on paper on a topic of their choice.

15. BUILDINGS CONVEY HISTORY

Get to know the local buildings and find out their stories! Why was the house built? How did they try to build the ideal society of Mänttä through the buildings? With the help of scale models, multimedia and a research task, the pupils can find out information about the buildings in pairs and also consider their current state. The sites include the Club, the Tennis Pavilion, the church, the school, the power plant, the block of flats called Pilvilinna, the Workers’ House and the Joenniemi cowshed.
