Vibration – the state of colour on a two-dimensional surface

In spring 2026, an exhibition by Anish Kapoor will open at Serlachius. In his works, Kapoor moves in the borderland between our inner world and external reality. He skillfully utilises visual archetypes and metaphysical juxtaposition, eternal questions about existence and non-existence, destruction and birth.

Kapoor’s early works are characterised by a pigment powder that covers the works and the space around them. For this, Kapoor came up with the idea of brightly coloured pigment mounds, which can be found in Indian markets and temples.

Kapoor’s works have been defined as post-minimalist. They are often simple, curved in shape, usually monochromatic and brightly colored. They often draw the viewer’s attention to the mystery, awe-inspiring size or simple beauty of the cavities in the works.

Getting to know different graphics methods

In the course, we will be inspired by spatiality through color. We familiarise ourselves with the different techniques of gravure printing, such as aquatint technique, and complement the expression with line etching, soft-bottom and drypoint techniques. We also do shade experiments with both rolling and the chine collé technique. The teaching is personal and strives to take into account individual wishes and goals. Participation does not require previous knowledge of printmaking techniques.

We will be accompanied by guides on a unique journey to explore Serlachius’ Anish Kapoor exhibition. In addition, we will explore Serlachius’ other exhibitions and, exceptionally, get to explore the gems of printmaking from the treasures of the archives with a lecture. You will get to know the art offerings of the Mänttä Art Festival on a guided tour of Pekilo, and you can relax in the Serlachius Art Sauna by swimming and taking a sauna
