Forms of Life – Anish Kapoor’s Art and Biomorphism

At the Ceramics Sculpture Camp, we delve into biomorphism, forms that resemble living organisms. The source of inspiration is Anish Kapoor, one of the world’s most prominent contemporary artists, known for his use of abstract biomorphic forms, as well as his rich colors and polished surfaces.

In the course, we will create ceramic sculptures using various clay hand-building, surface treatment and dyeing techniques. The course teaches three-dimensional perception and the realisation of one’s own idea and expression through ceramics. Participation does not require previous knowledge of clay and ceramics working techniques. The teaching is personal and strives to take into account individual wishes and goals. The programme of the camp is carried out in Finnish language.

The course offers a unique opportunity to participate on a guided tour and explore Serlachius’ Anish Kapoor exhibition, which presents his paintings that delve into eternal questions and a new monumental sculpture.

In addition, we will get to know other exhibitions by Serlachius and hear about the work of a museum professional. We will visit the Mänttä Art Festival on a guided tour and relax in the Serlachius Art Sauna by taking a sauna and swimming.

The teacher at the visual arts camp is sculptor and ceramic artist Tiia Matikainen. She graduated with a Master of Arts degree from the University of Art and Design Helsinki, and her works have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Finland and abroad. During the course, you will work in her sculpture studio, where you can find the necessary materials, a large ceramic kiln and a pottery.

Ceramics are not available immediately after the course. The works are burned by the teacher and can be picked up from the Tampere Summer University office or, if separately agreed, from Tiia’s studio.

The camp’s working space is ceramic artist Tiia Matikainen’s studio in Mänttä.

The price of the camp is 440 €. The price includes teaching, lunches and visits with guided tours, as well as a material package. Accommodation and further costs related to food are the responsibility of the participants themselves. The camp is paid for online at the time of registration.

The camp is organised by the Tampere Summer University. The programme is carried out in Finnish language. Enrollment for the camp has been opened and it closes on 2 June 2026.
