International Serlachius Summer Art Camp

Art Hotel Honkahovi, Mänttä, Finland, August 16–20, 2017

In the spirit of Edelfelt, we will practise colour mixing and identification, different brush techniques, and “wet-into-wet” painting. We will explore Edelfelt’s central portraits and their backgrounds, as well as their technical features. In the style of 19th century academic school of portrait painting, we will do composition and sketching exercises, and draw and paint live models.

Teaching is given in English and Finnish by the visual artist Riikka Lenkkeri. Riikka Lenkkeri has become known as a skilled depictor of people. She has made several public portraits on commission, and has held exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. In teaching, she specializes in different oil painting methods.

Teaching is personal and aims to meet the wishes and goals of participants. Oil paints, painting mediums and drawing supplies will be provided for the participants. Participants may also buy brushes and supports from the teacher. It is possible to participate with water-soluble oil paints as well.

The Art Hotel Honkahovi, with its spacious indoor and outdoor areas, offers a great setting for working, complete with a scenic lake view. We will visit the summer exhibitions of the Serlachius Museums in the Art Town Mänttä, and the Mänttä Art Festival.

Read more: Albert Edelfelt

Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905) is one of the most internationally renowned Finnish painters. Portraits play a central role in his sizeable output. Edelfelt’s skill in interpreting the features and moods of his models, as well as his talent to create life-like and technically brilliant paintings with vivacious and soft strokes, made him one of the most popular artists of his time – even in the courts of Europe.
