A culinary journey inspired by Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela

We set out on a culinary journey, transported by historical tales related to the works of Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The dishes will be prepared using our national treasures directly from the Finnish nature, the pure ingredients. Each and every modern classic made of these high-quality ingredients has been inspired by the eloquent artworks of Akseli Gallen-Kallela.

1st course: Mäntän koski/Mänttä Rapids
The rush of Mänttä Rapids could still be heard from afar in the 19th century. Today, it is hidden in the depths of the paper mill. In our glass bubbles a delightful drink. But what is hidden in our plate?

2nd course: Talonpoikaiselämää/Rustic Life
The second course takes us into the realm of Finnish rural flavours. Could it be there’s a Slavic touch in this as well? The painting Rustic Life eventually ended up in Russia and travelled a mysterious path in the wake of the Russian Revolution.

3rd course: Probleemi/The Problem
Artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela, composers Oskar Merikanto, Robert Kajanus and Jean Sibelius often met for dinner in a restaurant to discuss life and art. Like the artist friends, we savour flavours popular in the late-19th century, accompanied by fine wine.

To finish: Sissi Serlachiuksen muotokuva/Portrait of Sissi Serlachius
Our culinary journey ends with Sissi Serlachius, daughter of the mill-owner G. A. Serlachius. Our dessert is soft with a hint of bitterness, just like Sissi’s life. Gallen-Kallela painted the portrait of mill owner Serlachius’ 11-year-old daughter Sissi in 1889. For its model, the work became a treasured and important work.

The dishes are presented via the works of Akseli Gallen-Kallela; a brief story is told in connection with each work and dish.

Languages: Finnish or English.

For extra charge: A guided walk through Serlachius Museum Gösta's island and the park and a campfire soup can be arranged before the dining in the restaurant. Also the guidances in the exhibitions of the Serlachius Museums and accomodation in wilderness in the luxurious rooms of Rapukartano (Crayfish Manor). Rapukartano arranges also sauna safaris, which includes two different kinds of saunas: a smoke sauna and a snag sauna (www.rapukartano.fi).
